Au Bon Pain

I had the opportunity to help Innovent, a brand engagement agency, create a refreshed brand concept for Au Bon Pain. ABP is a bakery cafe with locations throughout the US. They came to Innovent looking for a brand refresh to set them apart from the typical cafe and coffee shop consisting of the bland green and brown color palettes. They weren’t inspired with their current brand standards and wanted new brand elements to bring their brand back to life.

The current ABP logo and their ABP yellow brand color were the only pieces of their current brand they knew they wanted to keep while everything else was in the clear for an update. The updated brand refresh concept I created included new colors that were elevated and exposed by using new designs and custom textures.

The revived color palette still gave a nod to the French culture with a modern red and blue, but included pink and aqua colors to brighten things up. Because “Au Bon Pain” means “good bread” in French, I wanted to focus on bread as the influence for interesting brand elements. The textures, graphics, and icons included in the concept below were inspired by the natural texture and process of making good bread.

Textures + Graphic Elements

The two graphics I created above were inspired by the creation of bread. The first textural graphic was created from a photo of whole grain flour that has been manipulated into an interesting textural design background that adds another layer of dimension and interest to the brand. The second graphic was created with the intent to mimic layers inside pastries and the folding of dough. I included the refreshed brand colors in this second graphic element to add some of the brightness and contrast into the brand. These graphic elements can be used as design backgrounds or added elements to different mediums such as store design, brand packaging, menu design, websites, and more.
